NCAA Week 0: Assessing Feleipe Franks’ Performance, and What it Means for UF
Florida’s defense is good, but as long as Feleipe Franks is the quarterback they’re a fringe SEC East contender. The last 4 weeks of last season look like they were a flash in the pan, and the QB that got booed out of The Swamp looks like the real Feleipe Franks.
On the surface, his statline might not look THAT bad, throwing 2 touchdowns and rushing for another, but anyone who watched the game knows it wasn’t a good performance. Many of his passing yards came from long runs after catch, through he does deserve some credit for getting his athletes the football. He made some bad decisions leading to a lost fumble and 2 costly interceptions, his 2nd being in crunch time late in the 4th quarter. Those mistakes just can’t happen, he can’t be trying to fit the ball into a tight window while protecting a slim lead in the 4th quarter. In order for Florida to contend in the SEC East they’re going to need, at the very least, competent quarterback play. He can’t count on the defense to get 10 sacks again, definitely not against the likes of Georgia and Missouri.
We’ll see what the season holds for this Florida Gators football team, but my early take is that there is a lot of work to be done for them to live up to their preseason expectations. More detailed recaps to come throughout the season…
